Opisthorchis felineus, the cat liver fluke, infects humans who eat undercooked fish containing the metacercaria. The adult fluke lives in the bile ducts of the liver. Metagonimus flukes are minute (0.5–1.5 mm in length) and characteristically have a laterally deviated (submedian located) ventral sucker without a ventrogenital apparatus or a genital sucker and two testes near the posterior extremity (Figure 1). Metagonimus flukes are morphologically distinguished from other heterophyids, including Heterophyes, Heterophyopsis, Pygidiopsis, Centrocestus Tapeworms. Tapeworms (Cestoda) are a highly diversified group of ubiquitous endoparasites that generally have a two-phase life cycle: vertebrates serve as final hosts and all orders may utilize arthropods, other invertebrates or even vertebrates as first intermediate hosts with the sole exception of the Caryophyllidea, whose eggs only infect oligocheate annelids. Cobbold, 1855. Fasciola gigantica is a parasitic flatworm of the class Trematoda, which causes tropical fascioliasis. It is regarded as one of the most important single platyhelminth infections of ruminants in Asia and Africa. Estimates of infection rates are as high as 80–100% in some countries.

(d) Class Cestoda includes tapeworms such as this Taenia saginata. T. saginata, which infects both cattle and humans, can reach 4–10 meters in length; the specimen shown here is about 4 meters.

Class Trematoda. The trematodes, or flukes, are parasites of mollusks and a variety of different organisms, such as humans. They also have suckers as they are parasites and obtain food by sucking substances from the host. Example: Liver fluke. Examples of Phylum Platyhelminthes. Humans can acquire the parasite by eating raw watercress (which grows naturally at the edges of lakes and ponds and is cultivated in many countries in Asia and Europe) containing the metacercariae of the fluke.

View the preserved liver fluke specimens. Liver flukes are an example of a parasitic flatworm. Access this website to learn more about the liver fluke life cycle. Figure 01: Trematode – Fluke Fluke parasites cause many diseases such as schistosomiasis and are involved as vectors which transmit the disease from one host to another. Liver fluke disease occurs through the ingestion of raw fish and results in the inflammation of bile ducts bringing about gastrointestinal disorders and cancers such as Liver Flukes.
